Mission Moment - Team Hero, Jen Polo

A personal message from Amanda Goble:

Below is an update from Team Hero Jen Polo's Trek blog. All very good news as you are preparing for some long mileages this weekend. Remember to check out her blog at http://womenwhoride.typepad.com/jen

Well, it's been a long couple of days since my scan - my body is still "enjoying" the effects of the barium. But, I am soooooo happy to report that my radiology report was the shortest it has been in almost 3 years. NO CANCER! No glowing spots, no little bits, nothing. My doctor knows that it does not suffice to say "You're fine." I have to lay my eyes on that report (and many times the actual scan films) myself.

So, scan-a-rama-ding-dong! [Insert your own sound effect and crazy dance of joy here].

It's hard to explain to those who haven't been directly through the roller coaster of cancer themselves how much living between these scans changes you. My entire personality changes right before each scan because of the anxiety and the mental preparation you have to go through to deal with whatever may come. Sometimes, okay most times, at least for Jeff and I that mental preparation comes in the form of sarcastic humor. Jeff comes with me to each appointment and so as we are sitting waiting for lab work, his work phone buzzes with incoming e-mail.

Jeff: "Hmmm. . . a rep from a company is coming in to take us to lunch. What time will we be done?" Me: "Do you want my next blog title to be "Honey, how's your steak?. . . I have cancer again." ? Jeff: "Funny. I'll e-mail that back to them." Humor is what gets us through.

I had someone say to me last year, "You have to go every three months - that's so often." Yes, it may seem often to some, but, to me, being granted a three month reprieve from pokes, prods, questions, forms, lab results, chemo - any of it feels - like a lifetime. We rejoiced this summer when I was given the "whole summer" off. I felt free to make plans without reservation and live the summer to its fullest without tempering myself for the "what if" that comes every time you step foot in the oncology door.

I can now live with abandon for the next three months (okay, okay, within the confines of making sure my kids get to school, we all have clean underwear, yada, yada, yada).

The blog is AWESOME Jen! So happy to hear about the clear scan!

Mission Moment - Team In Training Websites

A personal message from Amanda Goble:

Each of you carries your own reasons for doing Team In Training. Sometimes people are looking for a challenge, or a way to give back, and in many cases you are doing TNT in honor or memory of a friend or family member. I encourage you, when you may be sore from a long training, or seemingly at an end with your fundraising, to look at the websites of your teammates. Just use the names listed below in the fundraising updates and search them via the following website: http://www.active.com/lls/tnt/search.cfm.

Chances are you will be motivated, inspired, and in many cases even moved to tears by the thoughts shared by some. We are all in this together, and we must lean and rely on one another in order to not only cross our individual finish lines, but also the ultimate finish line – which is to find a cure. Take a few minutes to look through some of these sites and you will very much be reminded of the true reason for TNT and why all of you are working so hard.

The First Mile - Training this Sunday at 7:00 AM - Valley Green

A personal message from Amanda Goble, our Team In Training Campaign Coordinator:

Congratulations to all of you who completed PDR as a training run/walk this past weekend. It was wonderful to see you guys out there, and I hope that the race day experience just got you even more excited about the things you have done and will continue to do through this program. The PDR Team itself was extremely successful and we had a tremendous first fall event. Following this weekend we will get into our longest mileages of the season. Make sure to listen to your coaches and now, more than ever, is the time to get out to the group trainings! I know, from personal experience, it is easier and a lot more fun to do these distances with teammates, coaches and friends. I know that alarm goes off early on Saturday and Sundays but you will not regret getting out there with the Team. Hope to see you this weekend!

The First Mile - Philadelphia Distance Run at 7:00 AM - TNT Tent at Eakins Oval

A personal message from Amanda Goble, our Team In Training Campaign Coordinator:

The PDR Team has been wished well and they are in the final preparation mode for their event on Sunday. Many of you are using this weekend as a Training run/walk. The weather looks beautiful and the event itself is always fantastic! Please feel free to use the TNT Tent located in Eakins Oval (right near the start line) as your meeting point. I would aim to meet around 7:00 AM. Remember to encourage each other out on the course, thank the volunteers, and WEAR YOUR TNT GEAR!!! I would also recommend that you write your name on your shirt so that people cheer for you by name. Please note that the TNT Tent is used to check in only the participants who PDR is their official event. For you guys not registered for the race, you do not need to check in or out. GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN AND I'LL SEE YOU THERE!

GROUP TRAINING

NO OFFICIAL GROUP TRAINING THIS WEEKEND

Since all of our coaches (and most of you) will be running/walking PDR this weekend, there is no official training outside of that event.

For many of you PDR on Sunday will be the first race you ever do. Enjoy the experience and have fun. There will be Team In Training people all over the place out there and remember that everyone you see in purple is a teammate of yours. For those who aren't doing PDR, enjoy the cool weather as you put your miles in, and stop down at the race and cheer the rest of the Team on. I guarantee that it will get you really excited for your own event!

Mission Moment - Markie Rodgers (Team Hero for the Eastern PA Chapter)

A personal message from Amanda Goble:

Some of you have met Markie Rodgers, one of our Honored Heroes, and some may have been in touch with him and his family throughout your TNT experience. He is a not only a survivor, but one of your biggest supporters. Below is a poem he wrote to share with the team. So, as the training gets longer and we get closer to the final money dates, it is important to see why you have been working so hard!

IT'S A MARATHON WE TRAVEL TO,
TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE HERE
IN HOPES TO HELP MORE CHILDREN,
IN HOPES A CURE IS NEAR

OVER MANY MILES, THAT YOU WILL SHORTLY DO
YOU SHOULD BE SO VERY PROUD, SO VERY PROUD OF YOU!

I KNOW THAT THROUGH YOUR TRAINING
YOU MORE THAN ONCE WOULD SAY,
WHY ON EARTH DID I SAY YES
I'M SO BUSY EVERYDAY

YOU SEE, WHEN I WAS JUST A YOUNG BOY
'WAS AS SICK AS SICK COULD BE
LEUKEMIA THE SENTENCE
NOT GOOD NEWS FOR ME

BUT BECAUSE OF TEAM IN TRAINING
AND NEW ADVANCES EVERYDAY
I AM A PROUD SURVIVOR
I AM VERY GLAD TO SAY!

SO I HOPE I HELP YOU THROUGH
ALL THE MILES YOU ENDURE
SO YOU CAN NOW ENJOY
THE REWARDS THAT ARE IN STORE

I KNOW I AM YOUR HERO
BUT I HAVE A SECRET TOO
I ALSO HAVE A HERO
AND THAT HERO WOULD BE YOU!

LOVE AND KISSES
MARKIE!X0X0X0X0X0X0X0X0X0

Society News

About Me

I became involved with Team In Training during the Spring 2007 season by training for the New Jersey Marathon in Long Branch, New Jersey. Prior races include several 5K and 10K events, and one half marathon. Training for an endurance event takes a lot of commitment, courage, and vision. Looking back on my casual running experience for the past two decades, I never imagined training for a marathon! Through Team In Training, I found a great training program, developed new friendships, and made a significant impact by raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma from taking more lives. I am continually inspired by our featured team heroes and the personal stories from friends, family, and teammates that were shared during my initial fundraising for the cause. Please enjoy reading the past stories of my experience.
