Mission Moment - Emily Freidlander, Honored Team Hero (Summer 2006)

A message from Amanda Goble, our Team In Training Campaign Coordinator:

Here are some words of encouragement from someone who has seen both sides of Team In Training: the participant side and the benefiting from what the participants do side.

In March of 2003, at age twelve, Emily Freidlander was diagnosed with stage one Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Following the shocking diagnosis, she began a rigorous six-month chemotherapy treatment plan at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Later in the year, she was named 2003 Girl of the Year for our Man and Women of the Year fundraising campaign. Emily attributes this honor to sparking her interest in becoming involved in the society's mission. Today she is happily almost 4 years in remission and continues to promote cancer awareness. To celebrate her third year in remission, Emily and her mom joined Team in Training. Many fundraisers and team practices later, the mother-daughter team flew to San Francisco and completed the 2005 Nike Women's Marathon. Together, they raised almost ten thousand dollars for the mission!!! Emily then furthered her involvement with the Team by becoming one of our Team Heroes for the Summer 2006 Season.

Here is her message to the Team: "Through Team in Training you can be transformed into a life-saver. The moment you cross the finish line all of the hard work will be paid off; an indescribable feeling of success will linger in your body forever. To embark on such an opportunity will aid in those searching for a cure for cancer, those afflicted, and enhance your personal perception of the world and self. Enjoy your training, cherish every dollar raised towards cancer research, and know that you have made a difference in my life and all those who are fighting blood cancers."

Fundraising Focus - Quick and Easy Fundraising Ideas

Quick and Easy Fundraising Ideas

- Set up a table outside of a Wal-mart or supermarket on a Saturday morning and ask for donations. Wal-mart will even let you have a bake sale.

- Going to church this weekend? Bring your fundraising letter and ask if you can take up a collection.

- Have an end of the summer party and ask for a donation at the door.

- Follow up with anyone who has not donated yet. People forget!

- Talk it up! When making small talk at the gym or running tell people what you are doing and ask if they would like to make a donation.

- Running errands this weekend? Before you pick up your dry cleaning or take-out ask for a donation--you give them your money every week.

- Send out more emails. Email your old classmates from college and high school. Send a mass email addressed to "the class of ..." And if your school has an alumni board post it on their message board.

- Going out this weekend? If someone offers to buy you drink let them make a donation to your fundraising instead!

- Have a bucket drive and enlist the help of family and friends (see attachment for more information).

The First Mile - Training this Saturday at 8:00 AM - Valley Forge and Peace Valley Park

You've been involved with TNT now for a few months. For most of you, you have probably found yourself in a spot when the words, "That is the longest distance that I've run or walked in my life" have come to mind. You, as well, have probably raised more money for a cause than ever before. You have started to scratch the surface of what you are capable of, but this is really just the beginning. As you increase those miles, and as you reach, or far exceed those fundraising goals, you will continue to build upon an experience that is hopefully one of the greatest things that you've ever done. Cherish those thoughts. Know that you are doing something great for you, and also something incredible for our mission. GO TEAM!

Group Training - You are more than welcome to go to either training location. I will be at the Valley Forge training for the beginning only. If you have things to drop off to me or need to pick-up please do so BEFORE you start running/walking because I will be leaving right after you go off.

TEAM NEWS

Philadelphia Marathon Team: Your recommitment paperwork should be on its way back to me. You can bring it to training tomorrow or else you can fax or mail it back. Remember it is due this Wednesday, August 1st.

Nike and Dublin Teams: Please see your "TNT WEEKLY EMAIL" regarding your race applications and hotel information. Please return those race applications ASAP.

THE HOME STRETCH

One dollar and one mile at a time we will achieve the goals of our mission. We will find cures for these blood cancers. None of this would possible without each of you. Thank you again and again.

Mission Moment - Disney Marathon Participants

A message from Amanda Goble, our Team In Training Campaign Coordinator:

Team In Training is made up of a bunch of individual teams who are all out there training and fundraising for the same cause. We have different teams within a season, and then we have four different seasons year. Essentially we all are one big team and the stories that each of you have the ability to inspire anyone who is involved with this program. The following story is from a couple who did the Disney Marathon, written shortly before they left for Orlando last January:

Every day in our lives has a date attached to it. Let us tell you about a few dates in our lives. There was a Sunday in early January of the year 2005. Sorry, cannot remember the exact date but there we were in Orlando, Florida. That was the day we retired from any more marathons. We did the half that day as proud members of Team in Training, It had been our second stint on the team, having participated a few years earlier at the Rock n Roll marathon in San Diego. We got into this initially to give a little meaning to our lives. We decided to collect donations for a good cause and put a little focus into our lives. The San Diego experience was good. The Orlando one was much better and we were always so thankful to people like Jerry and Robyn who guided us in so many ways. We had friends with kids with leukemia and an aunt who passed away and somehow in our own hearts, we felt like we had represented them well. We were no Prefontaines but thanks to family and friends, our own little team within THE Team had scored a big win for a great cause. And with that, we retired from marathons.

June 16, 2006: It all changed that day. Our brother in law Don D'Esposito was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma. It was a terrible blow in many ways because he was a guy we loved so much and shared much of our growing up with our kids. We all wanted to grow old together. The prognosis on his condition was actually very good and he took on this battle with courage and a fiery spirit. And seeing that, we decided to come out of retirement. A little bit like Rocky and Adrian---one more run at this...in his name. Our plan was to train hard and have him and our sister be there in Orlando to watch us in this final run. He was very proud of us and was always asking us about our times and practices. We wanted to walk a few practices with him but his treatments and chemotherapy pretty much sapped him of the energy he would need.

October 7, 2006: At about 1:00 AM that morning at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, we said good bye to Don D'Esposito. Though he threw everything he could at this terrible disease, we all walked out of that hospital better for having known him, but at a loss for never being able to talk with him, laugh with him and, live with him any longer. There was a three-hour wait at Holy Cross Church for people to pay their final respects for Don. He and our sister are that well loved. Don D'Esposito won't be with us physically in Orlando but he will be there in our hearts. He lives there forever. He is there every mile we have trained and we know he will watch us and cheer us on Race Day. Rocky and Adrian are back for one more run. We intend to make you proud of us.

Each and everyone of you is doing something that you should be incredibly proud of. Thank you for your continued support of TNT!!!

Fundraising Focus - Coin Boxes

How To Fundraise Using Coin Boxes

Fundraising through coin boxes is an easy way to but a big dent in that minimum. We have boxes here at the office and I can bring them to training or put them in the mail for you. Or else any coffee can, or other container will work. While it won’t raise a lot of money really fast, you will be surprised how quickly small donations and spare change can add up. For suggestions on how to fundraise with coin boxes, see your "TNT WEEKLY EMAIL."

The First Mile - Training this Sunday at 8:00 AM - Kelly Drive

This team is turning out to be very special. I know that with the summer, and trips to the shore, or other vacations, that many of you haven’t been able to attend a whole lot of group trainings or other TNT functions. As a result you may not have a complete grasp on how big this team is. We are going to have a final team of about 150 people, and together you guys will raise well over a half a million dollars, and you will train over 100,000 miles (yikes!). Each step and each dollar is vital and we thank you for each and every one. GO TEAM!!!

GROUP TRAINING

Mission Moment - Spring 2007 Season Participant

A message from Amanda Goble, our Team In Training Campaign Coordinator:

There are many of you who have taken Team In Training on as a very personal mission. You have seen friends and family members fight these diseases, and what you saw/seeing them go through is far more difficult than any training run or walk that will ever do. Some of you have even battled one of these diseases yourself. You have seen the worst that life has to offer and you are fighting back by doing something about it. This story was shared by a participant from this past Spring season but I think that his words ring true today as well:

Two weeks ago my Dad told me, that he also has pre-leukemia. So, they cannot operate on him for the lung cancer that he has, they have to treat it with radiation. Last Wednesday they took bone marrow out of two spots in his back to see if he had leukemia or lymphoma in his bones. My Mom said that he never yells, he did. Well, last Friday, they said the bone marrow, was "contaminate" from the chemo of treating the lymphoma, so they would have to take the bone marrow out of his sternum. So, they did that earlier this week, and the pre-leukemia is what they found.

We got more news about my Dad, yesterday. From the pre-leukemia that they found last week, they told him yesterday they will treat with dacogen, to fight the leukemia and build up his white blood cells and platelets. They aren't even going to worry about the lung cancer. This drug has been on the market since last summer. They said if this doesn't work, he has a year. It's going to work, just like the experimental drugs he has been on for the lymphoma. He is a strong man, and I can see it. It scares me to death.

My Dad, my hero: 11 yrs of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, 2-3 months emphysema, 2 months 1 cm of lung cancer, 1 day pre-leukemia. I can't be stopped, I am a running machine!! I am not a hero, I am just a person that really cares about helping others, especially when they can't help themselves.

Thanks again for being part of a society that keeps the best people in the world alive, like Markie Rodgers, David Wolovitz and my Dad.

The only reason that the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is able to provide funding for ground breaking research and for patient services is because of people like you. The thank you's need to be extended to each and every person who is working hard to raise money and who is waking up at 7:00 AM on a Saturday morning to run/walk 5, 7, 10 miles. You all deserve the thank you's.

Fundraising Focus - Who Do I Ask Now?

Do you think that you have asked every single person you can when it comes to fundraising – chances are you haven't. You have probably covered the obvious groups (friends, family, co-workers), but what about all those other people who you interact with. Chances are that you have given them a lot of money (just think often you get your haircut or eat at your favorite restaurant) so now they can return the favor. REMEMBER TO STRESS THAT DONATIONS ARE 100% TAX-DEDUCTIBLE. Please see the attached list of possible people to give your fundraising letter or send your webpage to. I know oftentimes it is hard to ask for money, but remember the wonderful cause that it is going back to. The worst someone can do is say no, but you just might be surprised at the support you receive. There are only three rules when it comes to fundraising: ASK, ASK, ASK!!!

The First Mile - Training this Saturday at 8:00 AM - Valley Forge and Tyler Park

Greetings Fall Teams on a day when the weather seems to be a little cooler than what we saw earlier in the week. Hydration and nutrition are getting extremely important this time of year so I hope that many of you will be attending the Nutrition Clinic that is set for this Tuesday, July 17th (6:30 PM) at our office located near the airport (directions are attached). Please let me know if you are attending. Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Hero Gathering Monday. It was nice to see people outside of training!

All recommitment paperwork should be in your hands minus the Philadelphia Marathon Team. It is very important that you send that back on-time so don't push it too far down your lists of things to do. I encourage you to contact me with any questions regarding recommitment. You all of have done so much for this program, and for yourselves, over the last few months and I am so excited to have some huge teams throughout the second half of this season. Great job fundraising and training and as always – THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR EFFORTS!

GROUP TRAINING

Two Trainings This Saturday:

SATURDAY, JULY 14TH – 8:00 AM - VALLEY FORGE

SATURDAY, JULY 14TH – 8:00 AM – TYLER PARK

Group trainings are really important as your miles continue to increase. They allow you talk to the coaches about any questions you may have, and they also are a lot of fun! Trust me, it is much easier to get in six or ten miles with a bunch of teammates around to help you out. Hopefully you can make it out.

Mission Moment - Delaware Team Member

A message from Amanda Goble, our Team In Training Campaign Coordinator:

This week's mission moment comes from a member of our Delaware Team (we are part of the Greater Delaware Valley Division along with Lehigh Valley, Southern New Jersey and Delaware):

My older brother was diagnosed with leukemia when he had just turned 50. He went through his initial treatment and did well. He lived in Iowa and came to visit us when my daughter Reagan was (who was a pole vaulter) going to compete in the high school State Track Meet her sophomore year. Although she was a favorite to win the pole vault championship, she did not have a good day, and came in 4th. My brother said, "Don't worry Reagan, I will be here again next year and next year you will be the champion."

Two weeks before the State Track Meet was scheduled the following year, my brother called and told us he wouldn't be able to make it because his leukemia had returned, and he was going to have to start chemo again. On the morning of February 19, 2000, the day of the track meet, my mother called me at 5:30 AM to tell me my brother had just died. I knew I couldn't tell my daughter before the meet, and decided to tell her after it was over. So, we followed the track team to the UD field house, and watched my daughter win her first State Championship in the pole vault.

After the meet, when I told her that her Uncle Ron had died that morning, she said, "You know mom, I got this calm feeling right before I competed, and I really think he was here with me." I believe she was right. As I was running my 10 mile training run yesterday, I kept thinking to myself (as my body was trying to tell me how tired it was) if my brother was just another mile away waiting for me, I could keep going... I kept his smiling face in my mind, and I kept running. I know he was with me.

Thanks for letting me share this with you....it was the motivation for Reagan and myself to join Team in Training and be a part of this wonderful mission. As you cross the finish line on your event weekend, I know that you will carry Ron's spirit with you.

Fundraising Focus - Follow Up!!!

Did you send out your 100 letters at the beginning of the season, but now the donations have started to wind down? Did you send out an email, linking donors to your online fundraising website, but the response has dwindled? Following up with your donors is crucial. People tend to be to busy this time of year that they may simply have forgotten, but would still love to support to you. Here is how you go about doing that:

1. Send out a follow-up mailing. Many participants have created postcards on their computers, printed them on cardstock and sent them out to donors as a reminder.

2. Send another email. Send a follow-up email to the same list that you sent your original email to.

- Inform those who have already donated about the progress you have made with your training and fundraising. Attach pictures of yourself and/or your heroes.

- Remind those who have not donated that there is still time to give.

3. Make potential donors aware of the benefits of contributing.

- A chance to save a life

- Make a difference

- A tax deductible donation

4. ASK EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!! Let them make the decision whether or not they want to donate to you. Don't make the decision for them by not letting them know what you are doing.

The First Mile - Training this Sunday at 8:00 AM - Valley Green

GROUP TRAINING

RUN TEAM - SUNDAY, JULY 8TH – VALLEY GREEN: I will be there so please let me know if you need me to bring anything from the office. Also, please bring along your recommitment paperwork if you have it completed.

WALK TEAM – BUDDY WALK: Have a great weekend and please let your coaches know if you have any training questions, and contact me if you are need of anything.

I hope that everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July holiday! I know there are a lot of things going on with it being summer and all but I encourage you to make room for as many Team In Training things as your schedule will allow. We had over 70 people at group training last weekend at Kelly Drive (and others at the Bucks County one) and it is great to have such a large groups out there. If you are in town come out to training this Sunday, or else attend the Hero Gathering this Monday (details below) or the nutrition clinic that is coming up soon. All of these things are designed to help you through your TNT experience and to also make it a whole lot of fun! I know how much effort and dedication it takes to be a participant of this program and we can't thank you enough for all that you have done and will continue to do. Keep training, keep fundraising and keep making a difference in our mission! Together we will find a cure!

TRAINING SHIRTS

Due to the holiday these didn't go out in the mail yet. I will once again have them with me at training this weekend and will definitely put them in the mail Monday if you still haven't gotten your white TNT training shirt from when you registered.

About Me

I became involved with Team In Training during the Spring 2007 season by training for the New Jersey Marathon in Long Branch, New Jersey. Prior races include several 5K and 10K events, and one half marathon. Training for an endurance event takes a lot of commitment, courage, and vision. Looking back on my casual running experience for the past two decades, I never imagined training for a marathon! Through Team In Training, I found a great training program, developed new friendships, and made a significant impact by raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma from taking more lives. I am continually inspired by our featured team heroes and the personal stories from friends, family, and teammates that were shared during my initial fundraising for the cause. Please enjoy reading the past stories of my experience.
