Ninth Practice - Valley Forge

Full marathon participants completed eight miles today. Now, the mileage will increase each weekend until we reach twenty two miles, decreasing slightly until the main event. Yesterday, the Philadelphia region experienced arctic temperatures... I was so thankful for the mild weather today.

Fundraising update... I have reached $2072!

Next Sunday, we return to Kelly Drive.

More Inspiring Comments

Many inspiring comments have come via email and on this website recently...

From a former co-worker:

"Way to go, Steve! I walked in the Light the Night walk a few weeks ago... and my kids' school is collecting change for the LLS this month... so it's a busy cause for fundraising! Two of my father's brothers have died before their time due to blood cancers, so I'm an "easy mark" for fundraising for LLS."

Another former co-worker writes:

"...my brother and his girlfriend are involved in Team in Training. They do several events every year and my brother has been to California and Europe for marathons."

and in a follow-up email:

"I have been thinking about joining Team in Training. My brother and his girlfriend have been mentioning it to me for a few years now. My brother's girlfriend's brother has leukemia and they are very dedicated. Last year the two of them raised $60,000!!!! Unbelievable."

From colleagues of my father:

"This cause certainly has a soft spot in my heart. My father was diagnosed with lymphoma and has since passed. Thank you for your efforts in raising awareness and funds for this cause. Good luck, I certainly know that your father is very proud of you and your efforts. Have fun while working for a good cause."

"Best of Luck with your fundraising efforts. Over the years I've also have done some fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It is a great cause and hopefully someday we will find a cure. I had a younger brother who died of Leukemia in 1990 at 29 years old. Thank You for your efforts and Best of Luck with your upcoming races."

From a few friends:

"Way To Go Steve! Best wishes for continued endurance as the temps drop."

"Wow Go You! That is great, best of luck with training over the winter and spring! Not fun training in the cold, ehhhh... good luck raising funds for all those who really need it!"

"Good luck on the race coming up in April."

From a new friend:

"I haven't even met you yet, but I'm so proud of you! It's nice to know there are still those willing to give of themselves to help others. Check your page, I made a donation. Best of luck to you in the race!"

From a team hero (David C. Wolovitz - Chronic Myeloid Leukemia survivor):

"My congrats to you and your supporters for a great job of fundraising and your tireless training efforts. It is people like Steve and his supporters that allow blood cancer survivors to know that they are not alone in this fight. I have the honor of being a team hero for the Eastern PA chapter and am alive today because of a Society funded researcher discovered my magic cancer bullet, Gleevec. Stephen and his teammates are the true heroes in this story - GREAT JOB Stephen!!!"

Inspiring Comments

I received nice comments from one of our team heroes, a Chronic Myeloid Leukemia survivor and from a good friend... please see the "Comments" section for the Seventh and Eighth practices.

Eighth Practice - Kelly Drive

"Oh, the weather outside is frightful..." - unless you love the cold weather. The typical January temperature for PA has finally arrived... it was extremely cold during the first mile, but I was able to stay warm for the entire ten-mile run!

Coach Bill has advised the team to drink water during the longer runs, especially at the halfway mark. However, on a cold day like today, it was difficult drinking "ice" water! It was so cold that some team members had icicles in their hair!!!

Another fundraising milestone... I have reached $2009! I am so close to my goal now!!! Thank you friends and family for your support, and please continue to pass the word about the cause to your friends, colleagues, and family members.

Next Saturday, we return to Valley Forge.

Seventh Practice - Valley Forge

The surprise was revealed today... we were directed to a different area of Valley Forge for time trials! We jogged to the starting point, then proceeded to race on a flat, paved trail for the next five miles. I came in second place at 35:40!

Coach Bill stressed this was not a competition, just a way for him to measure our pace time for the big event (half or full marathon). If I manage to keep a pace of 8:00 to 8:30 per mile, I will certainly finish the marathon in less than four hours!

A big spike in fundraising dollars this week... I have reached $1822!

Next Sunday, we return to Kelly Drive for ten miles - the eight-mile loop plus an additional two miles.

Sixth Practice - Kelly Drive

Is it 2007 already? Ten miles were completed during today's training session at Kelly Drive for full marathon participants.

Fundraising dollars continue to accrue... I have reached $1221!

Next Saturday, we return to Valley Forge for a surprise course, according to Coach Bill!

About Me

I became involved with Team In Training during the Spring 2007 season by training for the New Jersey Marathon in Long Branch, New Jersey. Prior races include several 5K and 10K events, and one half marathon. Training for an endurance event takes a lot of commitment, courage, and vision. Looking back on my casual running experience for the past two decades, I never imagined training for a marathon! Through Team In Training, I found a great training program, developed new friendships, and made a significant impact by raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma from taking more lives. I am continually inspired by our featured team heroes and the personal stories from friends, family, and teammates that were shared during my initial fundraising for the cause. Please enjoy reading the past stories of my experience.
