Mission Moment - Spring 2008 Season Team Heroes

A personal message from Amanda Goble:

Believe it or not (more so me not being able to believe it) Thursday night was the Kick-Off for our Spring Team. It was a really good time for me to reflect on everything because I saw a whole new group of anxious, nervous and excited participants who weren't exactly sure what this experience is going to be all about. Then I thought about how you guys are so close to finishing your experience, as well as your teammates who I have already seen cross that final finish line. It really just made me proud of all the things that we have accomplished this season. All the money we raised (over $584,000!!!), and the miles we trained (I honestly don't even know how many we've put in, or if I can count that high), the relationships that have formed and then all the stories that we've heard along the way.

Thursday night at the Kick-Off I heard three survivors speak and all of them expressed the same message, "Thank you for taking on this experience, it is saving my life." Over the course of the next week think back to all that you have done, how far you’ve come individually, as well as all that we've done as a Team. Thank you for everything that you’ve done. Get excited – you are almost there!!!

Mission Moment - Leukemia Survivor Story

A personal message from Amanda Goble:

This email was forwarded along to me by one of your Nike teammates about an experience that she had when she was in San Francisco:

I have a brief story to tell you about Saturday before race day. As you know I do this race primarily in my brother's memory. He practiced medicine in SF for many years before becoming ill. His first office was right on the corner of Powell and Post Streets where Saks Fifth Avenue now sits and the starting line is located. I spent my off race hours with his children and wife. On Saturday we were in a restaurant for brunch, no where near Nike Town or the downtown area of the city but up near where my West Coast family lives. I happened to be wearing my Team in Training Shirt, long sleeve white one with a very small logo on it. A woman came over to me and knelt down next to me and thanked me for doing the race. Her daughter was diagnosed with leukemia at age two. The poor little thing lost all of her hair and was very ill from the treatments. However, that little girl is now 9 years old and a very bright 4th grade student. The Mom, who is from SF, did the race herself last year and just wanted me to know how thankful she is for all of the folks who give there time and energy to raise funds to help fight these blood cancers. She asked that I relay her thankfulness to everyone in Team in Training. I don't know her name but she certainly knows Team in Training.

Please don't ever forget the profound impact that you all are having on the lives of the patients and families who are affected by these diseases. You are doing the most amazing of things but giving so much of yourself to such an important cause. Thank you for all of your efforts!

The First Mile - Training this Saturday at 8:00 AM - Valley Forge

A personal message from Amanda Goble, our Team In Training Campaign Coordinator:

The Dublin and Marine Corps Team are safely back, and one of the first emails I saw when I returned was from Coach Kevin saying how great of a job you Philly Marathoners did at training this past weekend. Sounds like it was absolutely pouring, yet you guys stuck it out and completed your longest training run. Congratulations on having both the mental and physical strength to overcome the obstacles that were presented that morning. After going through something like that you guys are totally ready for your event. Follow that taper and please let myself, Coach Kevin or Coach Eric know if you have any questions leading up to Philly as it quickly approaches! Looking forward to seeing you guys out there this weekend.

About Me

I became involved with Team In Training during the Spring 2007 season by training for the New Jersey Marathon in Long Branch, New Jersey. Prior races include several 5K and 10K events, and one half marathon. Training for an endurance event takes a lot of commitment, courage, and vision. Looking back on my casual running experience for the past two decades, I never imagined training for a marathon! Through Team In Training, I found a great training program, developed new friendships, and made a significant impact by raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma from taking more lives. I am continually inspired by our featured team heroes and the personal stories from friends, family, and teammates that were shared during my initial fundraising for the cause. Please enjoy reading the past stories of my experience.
